From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
A female name. Old German Amalasuintha, compound of amal ‘work’ and swintha ‘strong’; the name was particularly current among the Lombards and Burgundians, and appears early as Malasintha, whence Melisenda, the name of a d. of Charlemagne. It was introduced into England in the French form Melisent at the end of the 12th C. The spelling Milisent occurs soon after, but Melisent was the more usual. Millesant, Milicent occur in the 15th C, and Lyford 1655 gives Melicent. Millicent is now the more usual form. In France there has been some confusion with Mélusine, the name of a water nymph (e.g. Maeterlinck’s Pelléas et Mélisande). Millicent occurs as a man’s name at Cambridge in 1584.
