A female name. this is apparently a purely Cornish name; it occurs in Assize Rolls as early as 1218 and Feudal Aids in 1346 as Meliora, in the 17th C as Melyear, Meluar, Mellier, in the 18th and 19th C as Meliora. Charlotte Mary Yonge, History of ChristianNames, 2 vols. 1863. Revised ed. 1884 says: ‘Melior is a Cornish name probably an imitation of some old Keltic name.
It is found as early as 1574, but is now probably ruined by Amelia.’
