From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
A female name. this Cornish name is usually taken to be a contraction of Middle English Emeraud ‘emerald,’ e.g. Lyford 1655: 'Meraud perhaps by contraction from the pretious Emeraud stone.’ Esmeralda was used as a christian name in Spain. But a Merouda Pygot is recorded in 1296, which is earlier than the earliest recorded occurrence of emeraude, and moreover there is no evidence that emeraude was ever shortened to meraud. On the whole it is probable that Meraud is a Celtic name, possibly a derivative of mur ‘the sea’ cf. Meriel for Muriel).
A Greek name, meaning: The emerald.
