A female name. Old English Mildthryth, compound of milde ‘mild’ and thryth ‘power’, ‘strength’. Mildthryth (d. 700) and Mildburh (d. 722?), dd. of a king of Mercia, and abbesses, were both canonized and were much venerated in the Middle Ages. The Middle English forms of the names were Mildred, or Meldred, and Milburh, Milbury, or Milborough. Milborough survived in Shropshire till the 18th C, but is now obsolete. Mildred survived in infrequent use until the 19th C, when it had a revival of popularity, and is now fairly common.
