A female name. The Scripture name, in Hebrew מִרְיָם, Miryám, the etymology of which is doubtful. Fuerstius translates it ‘betrübte, unglückliche,’ the sad, the unfortunate one; Tregelles, ‘their contumacy;’ others, ‘their rebellion;’ from maráh, to rebel; or ‘star of the sea,’ which is absurd, because mar is not a star, but a drop. The Greek forms of Miriam are Μαριαμ and Μαρια, whence the English Maria and Mary.
