Moyce Forename Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
A male name. the etymology of this name is obscure; it has been suggested that it is Egyptian rather than Hebrew and signified ‘saved by water’. It became a favourite Jewish name after he dispersion. In Middle English it appears as Moyse or Moyses (cf. French Moïse), with the nickname Moss, and though some of the persons of this name recorded in medieval documents were Jews, it is probable that others were not. The surnames Moyses, Moyse, Moyce, Moys, Moss are apparently of this origin and point to the use of the name by non- Jews in the period during which surnames were coming into use. The 17th-C Puritans made use of Moses as a christian name, and it continued to be so used occasionally in the 18th C (e.g. the younger s. of the Vicar of Wakefield).
