The Oxford Dictionary of Christian Names (1947) by E. G. Withycombe

M. In Celtic, ‘lovable.’ ‘This seems to have been originally not a name but a sobriquet given to St. Kentigern, the Patron Saint of Glasgow, which is at the present day often called St. Mungo’ (Swan). The fame of Mungo Park, the British explorer of the African interior who died, young, in 1806, has done much to keep the name alive; nevertheless, it is now rare.
