A male name. Gaelic ‘amiable’, an epithet applied to St Kentigern, and occasionally used as a christian name in Scotland, e.g. Mungo Park the explorer b. 1771.

In Celtic, ‘lovable.’ ‘This seems to have been originally not a name but a sobriquet given to St. Kentigern, the Patron Saint of Glasgow, which is at the present day often called St. Mungo’ (Swan). The fame of Mungo Park, the British explorer of the African interior who died, young, in 1806, has done much to keep the name alive; nevertheless, it is now rare.
A name derived from Mwyngu or Munghu, the subsequent name of the Pictish saint Kentigern. It may be derived from mwyn, tender, kind, mild, gentle, courteous, affable, with the addition of og, as a diminutive.
