Greek μύρρα (murra), Latin murrha and myrrha, French myrrhe, ‘the juice of the Arabian myrtle’; Greek μύρτος (murtos), Latin myrtus, French myrte, ‘myrtle.’ (The common myrtle is a shrub sacred to Venus.) Now Myrtale was a freed-woman, the friend of Horace: thence, our name, via French myrtille (pronounced mertil), ‘a bilberry.’ See also Muriel.
