From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

A male name. Greek νάρκισσος, the name of a flower and of the youth loved by Echo who died for love of his own image. The name was a common one for Greek slaves. St Narcissus was Bishop of Jerusalem in a.d. 195, and his name has occasionally been used in Italy. The English use of the name, which is post-Renaissance, is very rare and has reference to the Greek myth rather than to the saint.

The Oxford Dictionary of Christian Names (1947) by E. G. Withycombe

Greek, ‘a daffodil.’ Its adoption as a m. ‘Christian’ was caused, not in relation to that mythological youth who has given us ‘Narcissism’, but by the beauty and purity of the flower: five early saints are so named, and one of them was a miracle-working, vigorous old Bishop of Jerusalem in late C2- early 3. Rare in England.
