From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
A male name. Old English Northman and cognate Old German Nordemann were both used as christian names (cf. German, Franco). Norman was fairly common in England before the Norman Conquest, and in Domesday Book there is mention of several tenants of this name who had held land Tempore Regis Edwardi (In the Reign of Edward the Confessor). It continued in use for some centuries and gave rise to the surnames Norman and Normand, but died out in England about the 14th C, though it continued to be used in Scotland. Charlotte Mary Yonge, History of ChristianNames, 2 vols. 1863. Revised ed. 1884 regards it as being in her time exclusively Scottish, and its modern revival in England may be due in part to her use of it in The Daisy Chain (1856).
