A male name. Old German Audagar, Autger, compound of auda ‘rich’ and gairu ‘spear’, so that it is the equivalent of Old English Eadgar (see Edgar). It became Oger or Ogier in Old French, and was the name of one of the paladins of Charlemagne,Ogier le Danois or Holger Danske. It was introduced into England by the Normans and occurs some 7 or 8 times in Domesday Book. It was not uncommon in the 12th and 13th C and gave rise to the surnames Odger and Odgers.
