The name was apparently introduced into England by the Normans, and is found in the 13th C as Oriolt, Oriolda, Oriholt, Oriel. It does not seem to have taken permanent root, and soon died out. The recent use of the name may be a revival, but is more probably a use of the name of Oriel College, Oxford, which is derived from the word oriel ‘a window’ for the history of which see Oxford English Dictionary s.v.
