Originally and mainly Italian, this is a doublet of French Roland: the Spanish Roldan and the Portuguese Rolando afford an interesting sidelight on philological chop-and-change. literally ‘fame of the land’, it is famous in Italian romance; notably in Aristo’s Orlando Furioso and Boiardo’s Orlando Innamorato; Orlando is also the lover of Shakespeare’s Rosalind and the title of Virginia Woolf’s strangest novel (Harvey).
