A male name. Old English Osbeorn, compound of os ‘a god’ and beorn, a poetical word meaning ‘man’ (the cognate Norse word bjorn means ‘bear’). Both Osbeorn and the corresponding Norse name Asbjorn were in general use in England before the Norman Conquest, and were then reinforced by the Norman version. Domesday Book mentions several tenants named Osbernus and others who had held Tempore Regis Edwardi (In the Reign of Edward the Confessor). It remained in general use during the Middle Ages and gave rise to the common surnames Osborn, Osborne, Osbourn, Osbourne, Osbern, Osburn. Osberne is recorded as a christian name as late as 1489, and Lyford (1655) gives it in his list Osbern, Osbernus FB 1086, Regesta Regum Anglo-Normannorum 1087-97. Oseberne Hundred Rolls 1273. Osbarn Yorks Poll Tax of West Riding of Yorkshire 1379 1379.
