A male name. Old English Osmund, compound of os 'a god’ and mund ‘protection’. Both it and the corresponding Norse Asmundr were in general use in England before the Norman Conquest, after which it was reinforced by the Norman version (Osmond). Domesday Book gives several tenants of this name and others who held Tempore Regis Edwardi (In the Reign of Edward the Confessor). St Osmond Bishop of Salisbury (d. 1099) was a Norman. The surnames Osmond, Osmund, Osman, Osment, Osmint, Osmon, Osmand are derived from it. It became less common after the 13th C, but examples have been noted at Cambridge in the 16th and 17th C, and Lyford (1655) gives it in his list of names.
