Osmond Forename Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

A male name. Old English Osmund, compound of os 'a god’ and mund ‘protection’. Both it and the corresponding Norse Asmundr were in general use in England before the Norman Conquest, after which it was reinforced by the Norman version (Osmond). Domesday Book gives several tenants of this name and others who held Tempore Regis Edwardi (In the Reign of Edward the Confessor). St Osmond Bishop of Salisbury (d. 1099) was a Norman. The surnames Osmond, Osmund, Osman, Osment, Osmint, Osmon, Osmand are derived from it. It became less common after the 13th C, but examples have been noted at Cambridge in the 16th and 17th C, and Lyford (1655) gives it in his list of names.

Osmund, Osmundus, Hosmundus, Hosmunt Domesday Book 1086. Osmund Curia Regis Rolls 11C9-1215, Hundred Rolls 1273.

The Oxford Dictionary of Christian Names (1947) by E. G. Withycombe

OSMUND, the earlier form. This m. name—in the Teutonic it signifies ‘divine protection’—represents the Norwegian Asmundr. St. Osmund was a Norman noble: he became Chancellor of England and, later, Bishop of Salisbury—a model prelate until his death in 1099. (Benedictines.) Like all the Os- names except perhaps Oscar, it is falling into disuse.
