St Oswald (605-42), King of Northumbria, and St Oswald (d. 992), Archbishop of York, no doubt helped to establish the popularity of the name, which has never (like most of the Old English names in Os-) gone out of use. The surnames Oswald, Oswell, Oswill are derived from it. In the 16th, 17th, and 18th C the christian name Oswald is found in the forms Oswell, Oswall, or Ozwell. It has been in regular use in the Mosley family since the end of the 16th C.
