Pagan Forename Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

A male name. Latin paganus, originally ‘rustic’, ‘villager’, later ‘heathen’. Its use as a personal name-appears to be late (cf. Urbanus). It was introduced into England by the Normans (Edmundus fil. Pagani occurs in Domesday Book), and it soon became common, the usual vernacular form of the name being Payn (cf. French païen ‘pagan’); the surnames Pagan, Pain, Paine, Payne, and Paynel, Paganel, Pannet from diminutive forms, testify to its popularity. It did not, however, survive the Reformation as a christian name.
