Pagani occurs in Domesday Book), and it soon became common, the usual vernacular form of the name being Payn (cf. French païen ‘pagan’); the surnames Pagan, Pain, Paine, Payne, and Paynel, Paganel, Pannet from diminutive forms, testify to its popularity. It did not, however, survive the Reformation as a christian name.
