In C19-20, generally PERCIVAL. (Cf. the next.) ‘The Pierce- (sur)names are very curious, and it is hard to say exactly what the verb meant in these compounds. The much discussed Perceval, Percival is simply what it appears to be, viz. “pierce vale’” (Weekley, Surnames). ‘Yonge’ cites some very odd etymologies, she herself preferring a Celtic one, ‘companion of the chalice,’ which ‘Swan’ repeats with the alternative, also Celtic, ‘finder of the Holy Grail. ‘
