M. Latin peregrinus, ‘a wanderer,’ whence, via French, out pilgrim. It is ‘a name sometimes given in honour of St. Peregrinus, or Pellegrino, an Irish prince, who dwelt as a hermit on the Apennines, and sometimes to commemorate a birth that has taken place when the parents have been wandering in a foreign land’ (Swan).
