Found as a male baptismal name. From Φαραω, the Greek form of the Scripture name, in Hebrew פרעח, Paróh, which has been var. translated ‘son of the sun,’ ‘mouth of the sun,’ ‘voice of God,’ and ‘sun’ only; from the Coptic ph-rē (in the Theban dialect pi-rē). The proper meaning of the name is ‘the king,’ from φ-ουρο, in Coptic π-ουρο. Fay'-ro, that disperses, that discovers. A common name of the kings of Egypt. We meet with it very early. See Gen. xii. 15. Josephus says, that all the kings from Men us, builder of Memphis, down to the time of Solomon, for more than 3300 years, had this name. In the Egyptian language it means king. There are ten kings of this name referred to in the Scriptures. 1. He who reigned when Abraham and Sarah went down into Egypt. 2. The one who reigned when Joseph was prime-minister. 3. He that persecuted the Israelites. Exod. i. 8. 4. He that was drowned in the Red Sea. 5. He that gave protection to Hadad, son of the king of Edom. 6. He who gave his daughter in marriage to Solomon, king of Israel. 1 Kings iii. 1. 7. Shishak, who entertained Jeroboam in his dominions. 8. He with whom Hezekiah made a league. 9. Pharaoh-Necho, who made war with Josiah. 10. Pharaoh-Hophra, who entered into an alliance with Zedekiah.
