A female name. Greek Φιλαδελφία ‘brotherly love’, the name of a city founded by Attalus Philadelphus, King of Pergamus. The church at Philadelphia was one of the seven mentioned in the Book of Revelations, and Philadelphia became a favourite Puritan name (C. W. Bardsley, Dictionary of English and WelshSurnames (pub. 1901) says he found no fewer than 100 examples of it in James I’s reign) and Lyford gives it as a woman’s name. It was occasionally used as late as the 19th C.
