Pompey Forename Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

Latin Pompeius, ‘(a man) of Pompeii.’ The name owes much to Cn. Pompeius Magnus, Pompey the Great, the Triumvir: scourge of pirates, conqueror of Mithridates, conquered by Julius Caesar in 48 B. C. (The man is brilliantly portrayed in Oman’s Seven Roman Statesmen.) In C18, appeared Coventry’s satirical novel, the Life of Pompey the Little, (1751): for some odd reason, Pompey was already a name for lap-dogs. Yet it has maintained something of its dignity and is still heard occasionally.
