A female name. Latin f. of Protasius a name of doubtful etymology. St Protasia was martyred at Senlis c. 282 and her relics were enshrined in the cathedral c. 1191. It is difficult to account for the use of the name in England, which has not been noted before the late 16th C. Examples are found of various spellings, e.g. Prothasey at Lincoln in 1616, Protezy on a tombstone at Stoke-by- Nayland in the late 17th C; Sir Thomas Bodley (1545-1613) had a sister Prothesia, and a Pertesia Midwinter lived at Exeter temp Elizabeth.
