Quentin Forename Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

A female name. Latin Quinctinus, a derivative of quinctus ‘fifth'. The town of St Quentin in the north of France was the burial place of St Quentin, martyred c. 287, and the name became common in the district and was brought to England by the Normans. It is found in the 11th to 13th C and survived in Scotland until the 17th C. It has sometimes been revived in recent times.

Quintinus Domesday Book 1086, Curia Regis Rolls 1199, 1200, 1213, Patent Rolls 1492.

The Oxford Dictionary of Christian Names (1947) by E. G. Withycombe

In Latin, Quintus, ‘the fifth,’ was a very common fore-name; there was, moreover, a Quintian ‘gens’ or clan. In 287 one Quintanus—now canonized as St. Quentin—was martyred on the Somme. (He wasn’t the only one.) Thence the name spread to Scotland: witness Quentin Durward in C15. And to Ireland. But in Ireland it generally represents Cu-mhaighe (‘hound of the plain’), pronounced Cooey. (Charlotte Yonge has a very interesting section on numeral ‘Christians’: cf. Sextus, Septimus, Otto, Nona)
