From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
A male name. Old Norse Raðulfr (= Old English Rædwulf, compound of ræd ‘counsel’ and wulf ‘wolf’), became Radulf and then Ralf. It was in use in England before the Norman Conquest, after which it was reinforced by Norman influence; Domesday Book mentions tenants named Radulfus who had held Tempore Regis Edwardi (In the Reign of Edward the Confessor), and many at the time the survey was made. It developed into Rauf or Raff, and these were the usual forms of the name until the 17th C, when Rafe was more usual. Ralph was a piece of 18th-C antiquarianism, but the pronunciation of the name was still Rāfe. Recently, there have been signs that the spelling pronunciation Rălf (already general in Scotland and the USA) is creeping into use. See also Raoul.
