This very general Welsh m. (cf. Rhys Davies, who may go further than any other living Welsh writer), pronounced Reece (q. v.). Rhys, in Welsh, is ‘a rushing—i. e. impetuous—man or warrior’ and may, ultimately, be cognate with that very widespread radical which is seen in Teutonic rik, A. -S. rice, Latin rex, and raj, rajah.
