A male name. Old German Hrodric, compound of hrothi ‘fame’ and ricja ‘rule’, was the source of Russian Rurik and of Spanish Roderigo, but has not taken deep root elsewhere. Roderick, however, is not infrequent in Scotland, where it is used to render the Gaelic Ruaridh ‘the red’ (the Irish equivalent is Rory). It is used particularly by the Mackenzies and McLeods. The corresponding Welsh name Rhydderch was rendered as Rotheric; Rothericus s. of Gryfin is mentioned in Feudal Aids 1403 (cf. the surname Protheroe = ap Rhydderch).

Welsh Rotri, Rodri; from ruadh, red, and the root of rìgh, king? The Teutonic Roderick means “Famed-ruler” (from hrôð and rik, the same root as Gaelic rìgh). The terminal -ri, -rech (old gen.) is a reduced form of rígh, king (Zimmer, who, however, regards Ruadri as from N. Hrôrehr, but this in Galloway actually gives Rerik, M'Rerik, M'Crerik, 1490, 1579, thus disproving Zimmer’s view). M'Cririck still exists.
