It was introduced into England by the Normans and survived long enough to originate the surnames Rolf, Rolfe, Rolfes, Rolph, but it disappeared fairly early, perhaps on account of its likeness to the more popular Ralf.

A male name. Old German Hrodulf, compound of hrothi ‘fame’ and vulf ‘wolf (see Rudolf), and the cognate ON Hrólfr, developed into Rolf in Normandy (cf. Ralph from Raðulfr). It was introduced into England by the Normans and survived long enough to originate the surnames Rolf, Rolfe, Rolfes, Rolph, but it disappeared fairly early, perhaps on account of its likeness to the more popular Ralf. It has been revived of late. Rolf was sometimes latinized as Rollo, which was occasionally used as a christian name in the 19th C.
