Rupert Forename Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

A male name. Old German Hrodebert (see Robert) developed into modGer Rupprecht. The name was first introduced into England by Prince Rupprecht of the Palatinate, the nephew of Charles I, whose name on English lips became Rupert (his contemporaries also often called him Prince Robert). It is the admiration felt for him that is responsible for the modern vogue of the name in England, which is not mentioned by Charlotte Mary Yonge, History of ChristianNames, 2 vols. 1863. Revised ed. 1884.

The Oxford Dictionary of Christian Names (1947) by E. G. Withycombe

Was originally, and still is, a German m. name, earlier (and still) Ruprecht, earlier (and obsoletely) Hruodebert, which in Teutonic designates ‘(one for whom) bright, i. e. brilliant, fame (is expected—or hoped)’: it is, then, a doublet of Robert, q. v. The name arrived dashingly in England with Charles the First’s nephew, Prince Rupert, the erratically brilliant, too rash deviser and leader of cavalry charges against the Roundheads. ‘The Rupert of Debate’ was a name given either by Lord Lytton in his poem The New Timon, 1846, or by Disraeli, in 1844, to Edward Stanley, 14th Earl of Derby, statesman and magnificent orator (1799-1866).

Name This Child (1959) by Eric Partridge

Etymologically the same name as Robert, q. v.

Prænomina (1882) by Richard Stephen Charnock

What is Your Name? (1863) by Sophy Moody
