St Sabinus, a 4th-C Bishop of Spoleto, and St. Sabina, a Roman matron martyred under Hadrian, ensured the survival of the name. Both became Sabin in English, and the name is found from the 12th C, giving rise to the surnames Sabbe, Saby, Sabey, Sabin, Sabine, Saben, &c. As a man’s name it died out, but Sabina survived in rustic use until the 19th C and is perhaps not yet extinct.
