Sacheverell Forename Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

A male name. the surname of an ancient, but now extinct, family. The origin of the name is obscure, it is sometimes derived from the castle of Saute de Chevreuil in Normandy; but one example quoted by C. W. Bardsley, Dictionary of English and WelshSurnames (pub. 1901) from the year 1273, where it is given as Saucheverel alias Sauzcheverel alias Saunz Cheverel, looks like a Norman nickname ‘Sans Cheverel; cheverel was Old French for a kid and for the leather made from kid-hide. In the early 18th C Sacheverell was often given as a christian name in honour of Dr. Sacheverell (1674-1724) the Tory preacher, and it is said to have survived in rural districts in the last century. The Sitwell family, who continue to use it to the present time, take the name from William Sachevereth (1638-91), brother of an ancestress of the family and one of the founders of the Whig Party.

The Oxford Dictionary of Christian Names (1947) by E. G. Withycombe

M. This uncommon ‘Christian’, which is borne by a talented post-War writer and occurs in Beatrice Kean Seymour’s novel, Daughter to Philip, is obviously from the surname, which probably derives from the French village of Saint-Chevreuil-au-Tronchet (Weekley, Romance of Names).
