A female name. f. of Latin scholasticus, Greek σχολαστικός, ‘scholar’. St Scholastica was the sister of St Benedict (c. 480-543) and the first nun of his order. Benedictine influence carried the name to England where it is found as a christian name from the beginning of the 13th C until the Reformation. A 14th-C Legendary gives Scholace, and English Register of Godstow Nunnery, c. 1450 (E.E.T.S. 129-30) (1450) gives Scholast, as the English form. Camden (1604) and Lyford (1655) born stive Scholastica in their lists of women’s names.
