A male name. Latin Silvester ‘woody’, ‘growing or found in a wood'. It was the name of three popes, the first of whom, later canonized, was said to have baptized the Emperor Constantine to have cured him of his leprosy, and to have received in return the ‘Donation of Constantine’. The name was not uncommon in the Middle Ages (it is first noted in 1200) and gave rise to the surnames Silvester, Sylvester. Though less common since the Reformation, examples have been noted in the 16th, 17th, 18th, and 19th C; one in 1580 and one in 1623 are of Silvester as a woman’s name.
