SILVIA. ‘Who is Sylvia, what is she?’ as the song goes in The Two Gentlemen of Verona. Apparently, one who lives in a wood (L. silva): not necessarily a dryad, but equally delightful and more accessible. A frequent name for a shepherdess in pastoral romance, Sylvia ‘turned into a poetical name for a country maid, and has since been used as a village Christian name’, says Charlotte Yonge in the early eighties; in this our century, it has become almost aristocratic. A Sylvia should, whatever her age, be charming, and in her youth, a resume of youth’s charms.
