Symeon Forename Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
A male name. Hebrew Shimeon ‘hearkening' (or possibly hyena') was a common name in Israel. English versions of the Old Testament usually render it as Simeon, occasionally as Shimeon. In the New Testament, however, it is rendered as Simon (q.v.), except in the case of the aged Simeon who blessed the infant Jesus in the Temple. Simeon was kept separate from Simon in the Middle Ages, and though not a common name it is recorded from time to time and gave rise to a surname. After the Reformation it was used rather more.
Simeon Curia Regis Rolls 1200, Symeon Hundred Rolls 1273.
