When we hear the name Süleyman, the first thing that comes to mind is the Prophet Solomon, who is one of the kings of Israel according to Jewish tradition and is considered a prophet by Muslims. Due to this association, the name has become common. According to popular belief, the name Süleyman is derived from the Hebrew name 'Shlomo' (שְׁלֹמֹה). The Hebrew 'shalom' (שָׁלוֹם), meaning 'peace, tranquility,' has transformed into the Arabic 'salam' (سَلَام), also meaning 'peace, well-being, tranquility,' from which the word 'Islam' is also derived.
However, I believe that the name Süleyman originated much earlier than Hebrew, deriving from the Sumerian word 'silim' (health, well-being). In this context, the Sumerian 'lusilim' (healthy/well-being person) was used. In ancient Semitic languages, the root 'slm' indicated 'health, well-being, peace.' Based on this Sumerian root, we find Akkadian words such as 'šulmu' (healthy) and 'šalamu' (to be healthy). The words we use today in Turkish, derived from Arabic, such as 'salim' (healthy, in health), 'selim' (sound), 'selam' (peace, tranquility), 'selamet' (well-being), and 'silm/selm' (peace, peace, tranquility), are connected to the Sumerian 'silim' as mentioned above.
Prophet Solomon is revered by all three universal religions. His prophethood is mentioned in the Qur'an. Therefore, his name has gained fame as a universal figure. In Islamic traditions concerning Prophet Solomon, it is mentioned that he had control over the wind and knew the language of birds. The Turkish expression 'Even if you were Solomon, don't trust the wind' is used in reference to this.
The name Süleyman is expressed in similar forms in many languages around the world.
