A female name. this was a fairly common woman’s name in the late 16th C and throughout the 17th C. Later it survived only among the Quakers. It is found (Tacy) as late as 1786. Lyford (1655) probably gives its origin correctly 'Tace, hold peace, hush! be silent, the imperative mood singular and indeed it is a fit name to admonish that sex of silence.’ Camden (1605) gives much the same account of it.
