Tancred Forename Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

A male name. Old German Thancharat, compound of thanc ‘think’ and radi ‘counsel’. It later became Thancred, and in Norman French Tancred, in which form it was carried to England where, though not common it gave rise to the surnames Tancred, Tankard.

The Oxford Dictionary of Christian Names (1947) by E. G. Withycombe

Occasionally TANKRED. ‘In the Nibelungenlied the father of Chriemhilt... was “hight Dankrat”... The first syllable of the name is the same as our word thank... (He) was thus Thank-rade, or grateful speech, and from him the Northmen seem to have taken their Thakraad, which in Normandy became Tancred, the knight of Hauteville, whose twelve gallant sons chased the Saracens from Apulia, and were the founders of the only brave dynasty that ever ruled in the enervating realms of the Two Sicilies’ (Yonge). It has always been emblematic of chivalry; for instance, Disraeli, to his Zionistic novel Tancred, published in 1847, appended the sub-title, The New Crusade.
