From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

A male name. Old German Thiudoricus, compound of theuda ‘folk’, ‘people’, and ricja ‘rule’. There was a corresponding Old English name Theodric. It appears in Domesday Book as Teodric, Theodric, Tedric. The usual Middle English form was Terry from Old French Thierry, or Terrick; hence the surnames Terry, Terrey, Terick, Terrick. C. W. Bardsley, Dictionary of English and WelshSurnames (pub. 1901) gives an example of Terye as a christian name as late as 1629. Theodoric was occasionally revived in the 18th C. Terry has been used as a christian name in recent times, but apparently always with reference to the surname. See further under Derek.
