The Englishing of Latin Terentius, the name of a celebrated writer of comedy and of the Terentian Clan (gens Terentia): from terenus, ‘soft’ or ‘tender,’ says Charlotte Yonge; but is there such a word? Probably the adjective in gens Terentia derives from teres, ‘smooth,’ with which cf. Greek τέρην (teren: ‘tender’), which has, by metathesis, led to Latin tener, ‘tender.’ Common only among the Irish, it was adopted by them as a supposed rendering of Turlough (see Turiozgh).
From the Latin name Terentius. Macrobius (Sat. ii. 9) says the name of the Terentia Gens is derived by Varro from the Sabine word terenus, soft. Terentus was the appellation of a place in the Campus Martius at Rome, on the Tiber, where the ludi sœculares were celebrated.
