It is strange that the name has not become more general in England, for it is that of ‘one of the most celebrated of the Saints of the early Church... She was converted... by St. Paul... and... she afterwards attached herself to the service of the Apostle, attending him on several of his missionary journeys’ (Benedictines); ‘said to have... followed him about everywhere dressed as a boy,’ adds Dawson. Did Paul insist on this to prevent slander? And, in any case, how did these young women ‘get away with it’, for the difficulties in the way of impersonation—see, e. g., my Unconventional English at cunny-thumbed—are very considerable?
