A female name.: Greek θέκλα, an abbreviated form of θεόκλεια, the f. of θεόκλες ‘grand-daughterfamed’. In early legends this was the name of a convert of St Paul the first woman martyr. English Register of Godstow Nunnery, c. 1450 (E.E.T.S. 129-30) (1450) gives Tecle as the English of Tecla, but there is no evidence of its use as a christian name until the 19th C when it was occasionally borrowed from eastern Europe.
