A female name. Late Latin Theophania from Greek θεοφάνια ‘the manifestation of God’, another name for the Epiphany. Theophania became Tifaine in Old French, and in French folk-lore Tifaine was thought to be the name of the mother of the Magi. It was given to girls born at the season of Epiphany, and is found in England from about 1200. It gave rise to the surnames Tiffany, Tiffen, Tiffin. Tiffeny survived in Cornwall until the 17th C. C. W. Bardsley, Dictionary of English and WelshSurnames (pub. 1901) also records an Epiphany there in 1695.
