From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
A male name. Greek θεόφιλος ‘loved of God’, the name of the man to whom St Luke’s Gospel and the Acts of the Apostles were addressed. It was first used as a christian name in England after the Reformation, and was common in the 17th C. It has continued to be used in the Hastings family since the time of Theophilus Hastings, 7th Earl of Huntingdon (b. 1650).
The dedicatee of the Gospel of St. Luke—Θεόφιλος (Theophilos)—must have been thus named (‘beloved of God’) before his conversion to Christianity; but it soon became a favourite with Christians—though more so in England than on the Continent, despite the many saints proud to be so called. It is now rarely bestowed except traditionally or among the learned: for the sake of one’s son—a boy among boys—it should be avoided unless pugilistic ability is fairly predictable.
From the Greek name Θεοφιλος, signifying ‘a friend of God;’ from Θεος God, &c.
Greek (masculine) - Lover of God.
The-of'-fe-lus, a friend of God. A person to whom St Luke addressed his Gospel and the Acts. Acts i. 1; Luke i. 3.
Meaning: friend of God.
