In Teutonic, it connotes ‘Thor’s power’: ‘like the Danish Thorwaldsen, and the German Thorwald, (it) is the direct descendant of the Norse Thorvalldr’ (Swan). Its most distinguished English representative is Thorold Rogers (actually James Edward Thorold Rogers), who, the first under the Act of 1870, relinquished holy orders and wrote the valuable History of Agriculture and Six Centuries of Work and Wages; he died in 1890.
