Ulysses Forename Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

A male name. Ulixes or Ulysses was the Latin name for the Greek hero Odysseus: it was probably from Etruscan Uluxe. The name has been used in Ireland to represent the native names Ulick and Uileos.

The Oxford Dictionary of Christian Names (1947) by E. G. Withycombe

Rare except in Ireland, where it has, in C20, become considerably less general than in C19, when it was used less in a direct descent from the crafty Greek adventurer (lit., ‘the hater,’ though he was not a particularly good hater), than as a Classical manipulation of Ulick (q. v.). Whether, among ‘highbrows’, the use of the name by James Joyce in his slow-motion, rather desperately and sombrely brilliant masterpiece, will cause many little precocities to be thus christened, it is perhaps a little too early to say.

Name This Child (1959) by Eric Partridge

Found as a male baptismal name. The Latin form of the Greek name’Οδυσσευς, formed from the obsolete verb οδυω, to cause pain, on account of the pain suffered at his birth. Littleton says Ulysses was so called ‘quòd eum mater peperit in triviis.’

Prænomina (1882) by Richard Stephen Charnock

A Greek name, meaning: The hater.
