It was occasionally used as a christian name in the Middle Ages.

Latin, ‘of the town.’ Its use as a ‘Christian’ (now seldom heard) is the natural result of its prevalence in the early and medieval Church, which numbers ten full saints, and two saints beatified but not yet canonized: of these twelve, three were Popes and at least two were famous bishops; moreover, five other Urbans have been Popes.
