A male name. Hebrew ‘Jah is light’; occasionally used as a christian name since the Reformation (e.g. Uriah Bankes 1648, a Presbyterian minister). It was never common, and if it needed a coup de grâce, it was given one by Dickens in the character of Uriah Heep in David Copperfield.
Now rare and never very common, Uriah—from the name of the unfortunate Hittite for whose wife David had an all-consuming infatuation—is remembered chiefly for Uriah Heap, that subsidiary character in Dickens’s David Copperfield who is now symbolic of hypocritical sanctimoniousness and humility.
